DESIGNation Documentary Series: The Alphabet Press
The graphic design scene in Malaysia has a newcomer, or more like the return of an old art. The Alphabet Press is an artisan letterpress printmaker, built by 4 young designers to promote an old printing technique with a modern touch, known as “Contemporary Letterpress”.
They are here to preserve this old art form, simply because the advancement of printing in today world does not give you the same humane & tactile feeling as letterpress can provide.
Every design illustration is created in the design software and is transferred onto a negative film, and expose together with a photopolymer plate to create a raised surface in which the plate is fitted onto the printing press to have the paper pressed to create beautiful indentation which we call “the deep impression”. Using 1960s German vintage presses, each piece of work is created in-house by a team of craftsmen who obsesses over every detail. It is a notoriously labour intensive process but it adds an exceptional unique touch to any printed goods.
