An Ode to Leaders in Design: Steve Jobs
Here at DESIGNation, we're all about good design and the leaders of the world of design entrepreneurship that makes it all happen. So it comes as no surprise for us to start our blog with an ode to the late Steve Jobs.
This man has inspired us just as he may have inspired all of you in one way or another. An article about Steve Jobs popped up and some of you may have read it. We have. And we thought it was such a nice reminder that we had to share it.
The purpose behind creating any product is to make the end user happier than they were before. The article breaks down 4 elements that would evoke such positive emotions.
1. Ego - The ability to express one's individuality. To show everyone that you're different.
2. Storage - Something that makes you feel as if your ideas have value and they should be treasured, without hassle.
3. Ergonomics - It should feel amazing as you hold it in your hands.
4. Vanity - Reflecting back on the first point. You'd want to be seen as a person of taste and quality.
So if Steve Jobs was handed a pen, how would he have sold it?
#1 Share how well Apple has been doing and how it's topping as one of the world's best companies.
"A few things first. We've sold our 500,000,000th iPhone last week. Half a billion iPhones. That's a lot of iPhones. (Laughs)""
As of last week, Apple is now the most valuable company in the world. (Cheers) We beat Google, Exxon-Mobil, and Wal-Mart."
#2 What does Apple do to achieve that?
"We create delightful products that do something phenomenal"
"With the iPod, we brought you the world of music..With the iPhone, we brought you the world of internet in your pocket."
#3 Share that you have something exciting that will change the way people have been doing things.
"Today, we'll take you into the world inside your head - in your pocket. So, how do we capture your thoughts?"
#4 Share what everyone is currently doing wrong.
"Yeech, who'd wants to use a stylus?...Nobody wants to rub plastic against glass."

"Isn't that pretty? Just gorgeous. It's probably the prettiest thing you'll have on your desk. When you wrap your fingers around, it feels really satisfying."
"When your hand slides so easily, you notice thoughts come just a little quicker."
#8 Share how it works, how you'd use it yourself and how it's interconnected with Apple's previous products.
"It's embedded with a micro gyroscope.. As you write, the pen automatically saves your strokes on your iPhone. It's incredible - now you have two copies: one in your notebook to carry around an one on your iPhone to send online. I can flip through all my thoughts from yesterday, from last week, from last year. With my iCloud, I don't have to worry about losing my ideas."
"I use this pen every day. It brings a smile to my face each time I pull it out to jot down a note."
