Imagine 2 scenarios.
Scenario 1: What you see in front of you is designed, for example; your cup, bag, table, the clothes you're wearing etc. More often than not, these objects are not made locally. You would love to buy a unique addition to your home but where do you go? Large companies such as IKEA seems a lot more convenient.
Scenario 2: You are a budding designer. You have tons of ideas. What would your first step be? Where would you go to test your idea? What if you put in too much money in something you’re not sure is in demand?
Malaysia has tons of design talents. In fact, we have 48 design institutions and an estimate of 1,500-2,000 design graduates per year. But where are these talents?
Contrary to the current hype on entrepreneurship, designers were only taught to obtain technical skills but not to build a business around their ideas. A typical scenario for a young design graduate would be to look for a conventional design firm and work overtime but under paid. The design talent in Malaysia is struggling and scattered. It's sad when we hear about our friends in the industry that are allowing their passion to dry out because there's nothing to look forward to for our local design industry.
Malaysia needs a design revolution.
DESIGNation (de-sign-na-tion) is the new go-to place for locally-designed products by independent designers across furniture, fashion, product and graphic design. We believe in the future of our local design talents. We aim to boost Malaysia's creative economy by incubating and promoting emerging designers through retail. Every designer on our platform has gone through careful selection and is curated to show the best of current artistry and craftsmanship.
We aren't sure where this mission would lead us, but we have big ideas. We'll take it one step at a time and we'll start with helping these local designers increase exposure and sales.
This is an exciting time, and we can only do it with you.
Malaysia has talent.
It is time to show the world.
